Hiking - Bovin (Blue) Lake

Jun 4, 2020

The other day Tamara and I ventured on a hike we have never done before. I found it on my all trails app. Its called Bovin (Blue) Lake and its located in the Castle area between Pincher Creek and Waterton. The hike starts with a gravel road. In all actuality the gravel road portion is half the hike. Probably around 4.6 km's. Your at least walking with pretty views, but too bad for us, we couldn't even enjoy them because it was super windy. Like hurricane windy. I had my hood pulled tight and just looked down at my feet and concentrated on one foot in front of the other and not blowing over.

We were just hoping that when we finally got to the trail head that the wind would die down. I would suggest that if your going to do this hike that you bring bikes and bike up to the trail head. It will save a lot of time and energy. Making it to the trail head felt so glorious. The wind died down a bit and the sun was out, and it was gorgeous.

We hit a bit of snow along the way but the hike wasn't too steep and the views were breathtaking.

Darn wind

The snow was starting to come more often and in bigger, deeper patches. At one point we even hit a river on the trail and had to go around it. The clouds were out now and it was getting a bit colder.

What else you got in store for us Mother Nature

And then it was pretty much just snow. This is what the rest of the trail looked like all the way up to the lake.

I'm not going to lie, it was hard. We were just in runners and not prepared for this at all. Some parts were so sketchy and sometimes we had to make our own trails off the main path. We fell through the snow a few times, but we were determined to make it. Although I wasn't sure what we would find when we got there. We finally made it and it definitely was frozen but beautiful. We enjoyed the lake and ate our lunch for like 10 minutes, but then it started to rain and the clouds were dark. We were definitely anxious to get back down.

We just booked it down. It was better because we could follow our footprints back down. It was cold and cloudy and we were just trying to quickly get back to the sun.

Tucker was there too

It felt so good to get out of the snow. The sun came back out again too. Man, that hike was something else. We experienced wind, sun, rain, and snow. Pretty much all the elements. No matter the challenges or the weather we kept on smiling. Its what I love most about hiking. Being one with nature and the elements. I thrive on it. I feel so accomplished whenever I hike a mountain. It was a hard one but totally worth it. I want to come back in the summer with my bike and do it again. The actual hike is not hard. Not very steep, and I'd love to see how the lake looks with no snow.

We did it!

I just love myself a good adventure.
