Oahu Guide: Beaches & Sunsets

Feb 10, 2018

One of the biggest draws to travelling to Hawaii in the winter for a Canadian Prairie's girl like myself, is of course the sun and beaches. Now in all honesty we didn't even scratch the surface of visiting the beaches on Oahu, but I did want to share my love for the beaches we did visit. The first beach we stopped at (beside's Waikiki which I talked about in THIS post) was Sandy Beach. Its on the East side of the Island and was right off Highway 72. We stopped for a couple of hours on our way to the North Shore. It was beautiful. Though we realized pretty quickly that all the beaches are pretty incredible. The waves were huge and we just enjoyed sitting and watching people surf. I love the sound the waves make as they connect with the beach. The sand is amazing too, and I love walking up to the edge and letting the waves come in and roll over my feet. There is something so calming about the Ocean.

On our first night we really wanted to watch the sunset from a beach. I wanted to check out Mokuleia beach where they filmed the t.v show Lost so we decided to head there. But we were a bit late and ended up chasing the sun before it set. It would have been nice to watch it from Ka'ena Point but we didn't have enough time, so when we got to the beginning of the trail we went to the beach right next to it so we wouldn't miss the sun setting. I think sunsets are pretty special anywhere in the World but I love one's on the ocean because its just wide open sky and nothing is blocking your view. So incredible. We ended up making sure we were on a beach to watch the sunset each night we were there.

The other beach we spent a lot of time on was Bonzai Pipeline on the North Shore. Mostly because we love to watch surfing. We even got to watch some of a competition on our last day. The waves were massive and the beach starts up higher then goes down hill so its kind of like stadium seating which helps you see the surfers better. Like I said, they are all beautiful beaches. There are beaches all up the North Shore so there is no shortage of beach space which is nice because the beaches never felt busy or over crowded. I believe we watched two sunsets from Pipeline.

Ha. This pic and the next are the backs of two strangers that I took. They were just too good to pass up.

Sunsets also make for some gorgeous picture taking. Our last sunset we watched at the Turtle Bay Resort beach which is where we were staying (I'll post more on this later.) Again we were rushing and almost missed it.

I just love watching the sun disappear behind the ocean. Its so fascinating to think that as we watch it go down, someone else in the World could be watching it come up. I really want to try and catch more sunsets this summer from home. They are just so special and beautiful.

So when in Oahu, visit beaches and watch sunsets.
